Inset with two cowrie-shell eyes and carved from a solid wood-block, the design features classical Sepik tribal forms of notch-work, radiating circles, curved eyebrows and broadening, angular/raised nose. A large old vintage carved wood crocodile from the Sepik River region, (PNG) Papua New Guinea. Early to mid 1900s. Hand carved from a single solid piece of hardwood - very heavy. Beautiful original dark brown patina - shell eyes. In overall good condition for age (some raised points missing from the tail) but displays well. Measures 136cmL X 18cmW X 15cmH. Brought back to Australia in late 1960s from New Guinea. Large crocodile is approx 65cm long and has one missing eye (shell), intricate hand carved design, solid piece.
