Wollongong, 2500

Laid back lifestyle & coastal charm.

Wollongong may be only an hour's drive from Sydney, but in many ways it's a world away. With its great surf spots, friendly locals and relaxed vibe, Wollongong has all the ingredients of a blissed out beach escape.

Whether you're passing through or staying put, there's a lot to love about the 'Gong – the most obvious thing being the unspoilt natural environment. From the rockpools at Coalcliff Beach, to big surf breaks at Scarborough, there's no shortage of coastline to enjoy (even if all you want to do is jump in the car and go for a cruise). Surf culture is a way of life here, and there are plenty of accredited surf schools for those wanting to give it a shot.

With famous food and wine regions on its doorstep (Kangaroo Valley for one), Wollongong is also becoming a mecca for all things gourmet. Shop for local produce at the 'Gong's many open air markets, or let someone else do the cooking at one of the region's buzzing restaurants, like Sakura Sushi, Caveau or Co May Vietnamese.

And if you're after a retail fix, all you need to do is head to Crown Street mall – home to hundreds of specialty stores plus the usual suspects like Myer and David Jones. Trendy coffee shops and small bars are now popping up around town too, like Lee & Me, His Boy Elroy and The Little Prince and Dagwood. One thing is for sure – while Wollongong may be laid back, it's far from a sleepy little town.
