Overview, Look, and Feel of the Eunos 500

Mazda launched the Eunos 500 as a mid-size luxury sedan under its Eunos marque and the CA platform. It was revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1991, launched in Japan in 1992, and came here shortly after. The 5-seater was available for 7 years before it was absorbed into Mazda’s range in 1999. The Eunos marque came from Mazda’s desire to create a luxury brand that was distinct from its existing Ford and Mazda brands, but eventually, the company retired it and consolidated its cars back under the Mazda brand.

Following its merging with the Mazda brand, the Eunos 500 was later superseded by the Mazda 6 in 2003. At the time it was on sale, the Eunos 500 had counterpart brands named Xedos and Amati that were intended to be luxury marques as well. It was closely related to the Mazda Lantis, which used the CB platform as opposed to the CA. The Eunos 500 also was related to the Mazda Capella, which was the direct predecessor of the successful Mazda 6. It served as a base for the Capella.

One notable aspect of the Eunos 500 was its unique body. Compared to other mid-size sedans, the Eunos 500 was built low and narrow, making it attractive to those who enjoyed a sportier vehicle. In Japan, the width of a vehicle is important for taxation purposes, and the 500 skirted on the boundary between a 5-number and a 3-number car in terms of its width at 1695mm.

Fans of the Eunos marque will recognise two other prominent models related to the Eunos 500, including the Eunos 30X and Eunos 800. The 30X was a small, three-door liftback, while the Eunos 800 was a large luxury sedan. They were absorbed into the Mazda brand along with the Eunos 800, with the Eunos 30X related to the Mazda RX-3 and the Eunos 800 related to the Mazda Mellenia.

Eunos 500 Engine Specs and Performance

As an upscale vehicle, the Eunos 500 was designed to compete with the best luxury vehicles. It featured engines of 1.8L or 2L. The more powerful 2L engine was a V6 petrol engine with double overhead cams and 4 valves per cylinder. It was mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic.

As far as engine power, it featured 180kW at 6000rpm, along with torque of 175Nm at 5000rpm. The vehicle had a fuel consumption rate of about 8L/100km, although it varied depending on the model and the environment. In addition to its impressive performance, the Eunos 500 was appreciated for smooth handling on the road, helped in part by the included front-wheel drive.

Standard Equipment and Options for the Eunos 500

The Eunos 500 was generous with its standard kit. When it came to safety equipment, the Eunos 500 came standard with a driver’s airbag and anti-lock braking system. General features included a 5-speaker stereo with a CD player, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors and windows, climate control air-conditioning, central locking, and leather seats. It also came with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions

On the whole, the Eunos 500 had the trappings of luxury for the time. Reliability on the vehicle isn’t the greatest, so it’s important for interested buyers to get a good inspection before they spring for a second-hand Eunos 500. Other than that, the included equipment holds up well on today’s used market.

Eunos 500's Competition

Clearly, any buyers who are interested in a flashy car that shows off their wealth and status will probably look elsewhere, but that’s part of the charm of the Eunos 500. Without being the most expensive or the most pretentious, this car represents a solid choice that will still have people marvelling at its looks and appreciating its performance. For family driving or as a sporty solo sedan, the Eunos 500 is definitely worth a peek.
