Japanese Spitz information

What makes Japanese Spitzes special?

The Japanese Spitz isn’t just a pretty face; they’re a breed with a rich history. These dogs are believed to be the descendants of the white German Spitz. With their pricked ears, expressive eyes, and plumed tail, the Japanese Spitz has an elegance all its own. They’re energetic and lively—the epitome of joy on four legs. If you’re seeking a unique combination of beauty, intelligence, and charm, the Japanese Spitz is the one for you.

Japanese Spitz grooming and coat

The Japanese Spitz sports a beautiful double coat consisting of a thick undercoat and a longer outer coat, which they shed twice per year over the course of 2 to 3 weeks. During this shedding period, daily brushing is necessary. For the rest of the year, the breed is low maintenance, only requiring weekly brushing and infrequent baths, ideally once per season, as over-bathing can strip natural oils and irritate their skin. The Japanese Spitz’s coat has a teflon-like quality where mud and dirt don’t stick.

Japanese Spitz colours

Most often, Japanese Spitz dogs are adorned in pure white. This colour not only adds to their regal appearance but accentuates their sparkling eyes. Occasionally, you may find a Japanese Spitz with a hint of cream; however, the pure white coat is the most common and preferred among enthusiasts.

Japanese Spitz temperament and personality

Friendly, confident, and full of zest, Japanese Spitz dogs are everything you’d want in a companion. They’re spirited and exuberant without being unruly and their intelligence makes them delightfully quick learners. Great with families and eager to please, they are the perfect blend of an affectionate and protective pet.

Japanese Spitz barking

Though they are not known to be excessively vocal, Japanese Spitzes do tend to adopt the role of a diligent guard dog, alerting you to strangers. With adequate training, their barking can be kept under control, and their expressive nature becomes another endearing quality.

Japanese Spitz trainability

Japanese Spitz dogs are an intelligent breed, making them receptive to various training methods like obedience, crate, and socialisation training. Their keen intellect and eagerness to please make them apt pupils in different canine activities. Patience, positive reinforcement, and consistency are key to helping them become well-behaved members of the family.

Japanese Spitz diet

This breed thrives on a diet rich in animal-based protein and balanced fats, with some carbohydrates. Monitoring their weight is essential to keep them healthy and active. Safe human foods may occasionally be offered, and clean water should always be available.

Japanese Spitz health

As a generally healthy breed, Japanese Spitz dogs can enjoy a vibrant life when well taken care of. However, potential health issues to watch out for include patellar luxation and certain eye disorders. Regular veterinary check-ups can keep them happy and thriving.

Japanese Spitz safety

Being aware of the Japanese Spitz’s small stature is essential when it comes to interactions with children and larger breeds. And while these dogs make good apartment companions, they need ample attention and should not be left alone for extended periods, as this can lead to separation anxiety.

Japanese Spitzes and children

Great with children, the Japanese Spitz is known for being gentle, patient, and playful. Kids and Japanese Spitz dogs often become fast friends, growing up together in harmony.

Japanese Spitz lifespan

With proper care and attention, a Japanese Spitz’s average lifespan ranges from 10 to 14 years. Some have even been known to live beyond that, thanks to a loving environment and proper healthcare.
