BMW 318is 1998 Project
The Good: The car is essentially unmolested and stone stock. All the bits are there and the ‘is’ badge is somewhat rare. The sunroof works and does not leak. The M44 motor is bullet-proof and the Getrag is downright indestructible. I’ve kept the oil filled with full synthetic. Except for the driver’s seat and a scratch across the vinyl in the centre-rear seat, the trim is in excellent shape. The factory six-CD player in the boot works great and none of the speakers are blown. There’s even a cassette player for the ultra-retro among you. The Type 32 wheels are original and the lightest ever fitted to a BMW.
The Bad: The car is essentially unrestored, so all the bits that are prone to fail might. I have an assortment of OEM replacements for things like the guibo and transmission mounts. It needs these and more fitted. The tyres are cheap but do have plenty of k’s left. They could use a balance. The hole in the driver’s seat is from a kid who wore a chain on his wallet. The headliner despite my best efforts with Simple Green is filthy.
The Ugly: The left fender had an interaction with a guardrail as I was hooning around a sharp bend. I’ve never hurt a car before and I was mortified. The impact caused the blower motor for the climate control to jump its mount. I have not fixed it. The hose to the PCV on the valve cover was torn by the mechanic who did my roadworthy way back when. I used duck tape to get the idle back, and this eventually destroyed the hose so the idle is shite. The shocks are shockingly original with absolutely no oil or air left in them. Some Bilstein B6’s would work wonders. The rubber dampener on the steering shaft is shot. The engine and transmission mounts are sponges, so much so that the exhaust header broke from the torque. It has been inexpertly welded shut. The air dam took a solid blow to the chin from a dropped ladder on the M11. It will need to be replaced, along with the fog lights.
In short, this car is not close to passing a roadworthy, but a modest investment would leave you with a lovely little runabout. If you have any questions I will be brutally honest in my answers. The car is available for viewing evenings and weekends. Cheers.
