Bespoke Pine Side Table with iron spike legs - Scandi design

At Workshop87 we are amazed how great Australian Pine looks in modern houses, creating that Nordic Scandinavian look that people love. This side table has been created using a half round section of trunk from a huge old Pine tree that was felled more than 5 years ago. The pine stool is 44cm tall and has a diameter of 46cm. As a half-round section of trunk, even though the side table is large, because it has a flat side, it is easy to have it right next to a couch or next to a wall so it doesn't stick out too much and take up too much room. At the same time, if you wanted it to be more of a feature or a conversation piece, simply change the side that is exposed and it seems to become much more imposing.
The side table was created by spokeshaving the wood to a silky smoothness, and then sanding the wood to a gleaming hue before applying a liberal coating of natural beeswax. If the side table is ever scratched or scuffed, simply buff the mark out or dap a touch of beeswax on it to reseal the wood.
The wood itself has a lovely golden glow, with flecks of honey and jaffa within the wood. The top grain of the trunk has wonderful ray checking in the form of small splits, and the grain and growth rings can be clearly seen. The outer sides show great colour variation, but it is the flat side that shows the internal features of the wood that is the standout. The grain shows tiny squares of resistance wood within areas of less dense wood, creating an almost three dimansional feel to the grain. It invites the stroke of your fingers, and repays it with a silky smoothness that is a delight to touch.
