SY SX Territory Steering column ignition repair with Warranty!
You have probably already spoken to Ford and received the bad news that the Bosch ignition is a fixed part of the steering column top and you have to replace the whole thing at a cost of roughly 1800 dollars. I've actually sold some of these to Ford dealers themselves now so they are looking for cheaper options for their customers too. (If you are in Perth & the back has fallen out of your column & the key does nothing at all when you turn it, look for my other auction as you may be able to have me fix it in your car which is much cheaper.) Industry tradies get a discount so txt, call or email me for details.
Second had units can be had considerably cheaper, but since they have the same flaw that caused yours to fail, you are basically taking a chance that you'll be back in the same position sometime soon. Might last a week.. might last 5 years. (almost certainly not the later)
All is not lost. After destroying a heap of these things practising, I've gotten very good at rebuilding the ignition and fixing the lost starter spring stop. The diecast aluminium alloy that the spring stop is made from is weak and the stop itself is less than a milimetre thick.
I replace this with a lovely 2+ mm thick steel job that I tested with more than 500 ignition uses BEFORE installing it in my daily driver two years ago and it's still perfect.
I'm good enough at it now that I've never had one fail and I now offer a warranty of 12 months on all repairs. (I am not a business, this is something I do for a hobby to fund my Ford habit. Plus I have 3 small children who destroy everything in sight so I have lots of expenses. :-) )
These steering columns are easy to get out of the car (4 nuts hold the column to the dash, one hex bolt holds the steering wheel on and about a dozen screws hold the plastic column surround and the indicator/wiper arms on.
The columns also fit nicely in a 25 dollar express post bag for shipping interstate, so I've been doing most of my business with easterners of late.
If you have tried to repair your own column and are coming to me to because the black plastic plate with the wires coming from it is now in 3 or 4 pieces, your column is not an exchange unit because I can't repair shattered plastic and nobody sells those back plates. I'll buy it for 10 bucks for spare parts though. I usually have a supply of old spares, but I'm currently out of the back contact plates, so if you've shattered yours you may have to wait until I get can get more.
I'd really appreciate it if all the parts of the ignition back are included with any column sent to me, there are two ball bearings, a long thin spring, a shorter much thicker spring,a copper contact plate and a big plastic piece with a big spring inside the middle and two smaller springs in outer holes. I have spares, but the supply is light presently so my spares are not endless.
I have rebuilt BA & BF columns, floor and column shift the lock mech in all of them is the same (BA/SX have different barrels from BF/SY but they have the same problem and I can fix all).
Getting your column repaired does NOT require that your computer be reset (called a PATS reset) but I can do this also if required for any reason. (but only if you are local to Perth obviously) I can also supply aftermarket remotes if needed.
I don't mind calls, but I actually prefer texts and/or emails simply because I'm not always in range and as I said... full time job.
