WHAT BOARD IS SUITED TO ME?
THE BASICS:
Shortboards are not for novices unless you have very good balance and do not mind spending a lot of time falling off. They are a performance boards that requires constant rail to rail transition to initiate constant motion.
Fish boards are for the intermediate surfer but are also well suited to the beginner who has balance and some surfing experience. They are wider and flatter than a short board, designed for long sweeping carves, it’s flattish rocker and added width enhances wave catching with added stability.
Mini Mals are an all-round board. Used by novices to the advances surfer. They can be a performance based board or a cruising board. Performance boards have more rocker (the curve on the underside of the board extending from the nose to the tail).
Longboards are for the intermediate to advanced surfer. Great for cross stepping, hanging five or ten or just trimming along the face of the wave. Once again the performance of the long board is based on shape and design like the mini mal.
Do not confuse ambition with ability. Be honest in your own ability so the correct board can be matched with your level of competency. Above all treat each board as a blank canvas, do not be swayed by graphics, select the board suited to you first before choosing the art work.
Remember the width of the board determines stability. Thickness determines buoyancy.
More buoyancy enhances paddling and wave catching but decreases the manoeuverability of the board.
The waves are for everyone so treat others out in the water as you yourself would want to be treated. It can be one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life, Hope to see you out there!
