Decking isn’t a side line for us. We’re a dedicated Hardwood Sawmill set up and specifically programmed to produce Hardwood Decking, Shiplap and Wall Panel. The time capsules that we harvest grows locally and within sight of our sawmill. We’ve been transforming locally grown hardwood into beautiful pieces of hardwood art since the 1940’s. We have 140x20 Blackbutt Feature grade for $5.949.
You might wonder why our decking sizes are larger in both width and thickness than the others. We mill the feed stock wider and thicker in the first place. A structure built from heavier hardwood is likely to last longer and be more durable than one built from fence palings.
Which brings me to composite decking. Composite decking is basically 50% wood fibre and 50% plastic. It’s all good to say that the “glue” is weather proof and will last forever but the timber fiber used was probably cheap stuff in the first place. Composite deck may not wear as well as natural hardwood in that it may not be as hard as natural hardwood. Some of the more expensive composite decking products are fully sealed with thin layer of plastic. They did this to stop the moisture from entering the composite board and deep mould occurring in the wood fiber. The thin plastic protective layer is all good until it too gets scratched and damaged. While hardwood can be scratched, banged and damaged all day long, it can be lightly sanded and re coated back to new.
It would appear, even today, that it’s very difficult to get composite engineered products to out do the natural hardwood product when exposed to full weather. By the simple fact that most engineered products are nailed or screwed in some way during their installation allows moisture to enter which ultimately is the cause for the premature decay of these products.
Our sawmill was built somewhere around 1910, it’s never been painted and it’s still standing. There is no way on this earth, if it had been built from composite decking, laminated beams or ply wood that it would still be standing today.
Maybe the real reason we build our decks from locally grown natural hardwood is because there’s something very special that emerges from the silence of real and natural wood.
Thanks for your time and interest. Please call 07******1008 anytime for any questions and options regarding our timber products. As we are a production sawmill, all product has to be ordered in advance prior to pick up.
