$10
Following the end of World War 2 the Australian Regular Army and the Citizen’s Military Forces were re-organised and new badges and insignia issued for wear. These shoulder titles were introduced in 1948 and worn during the period 1948 to 1960. All shoulder titles worn during this period had a border around the lettering and were issued in two types of cloth for summer and winter wear. These titles were worn on winter uniforms and were manufactured for Infantry units using a scarlet woollen background and machine embroidered white lettering and border. Shoulder titles during the period 1948 – 1962 had a border around the lettering, and were issued in two types of cloth, for both summer and winter wear.
The 56th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army raised in 1916 for service during the World War I and fought in the trenches of the Western Front in France and Belgium before being amalgamated with the 54th Battalion in late 1918 following the German Spring Offensive reduced the numbers in both battalions. After the war, the Battalion was re-raised as a part-time unit in New South Wales. During World War II the Battalion was mobilised and undertook garrison duties in Australia until it was disbanded in 1944. It was briefly re-raised in 1956 as the 56th Reconnaissance Battalion [Riverina Regiment], but was disbanded the following year and its personnel used to re-raise the 4th Battalion, which later became part of the Royal New South Wales Regiment in 1960.
This is a rare original embroidered scarlet winter title [with border] worn by members of the 56th Reconnaissance Battalion [Riverina Regiment] on Battle Dress and Greatcoats during the period 1956 – 1957. The title is in sed unissued condition with minor moth-pitting and ready to join a collection of Australian Army badges.
