1974 Ford Falcon Coupe
9/74 built XB Falcon 500 GS hardtop. Was originally a 302, 4 speed manual in Deep Aqua (blue). In Dec 2000 I bought it as basically a shell with suspension and a few other parts.
Over the next 13 years it was stripped right back and rebuilt, mostly by myself with the help of various professionals when needed. Never intended as a show car or a quarter-mile weapon, as the budget for it was always tight, however it was put together with much care and attention, with the overall goal being to build a nice cruiser that looked and sounded great, had a good amount of grunt and was reliable.
It is now Onyx black, with black interior. Has a mild 351 (nice cam, 302 heads, 600 vac sec Holley, extractors and twin 2.5inch system). Gearbox is a Borg Warner 4 speed Single Rail, diff is a Ford nine-inch limited slip (Traction Loc) from a Landau with disc brakes, 2.75 ratio. Included in the sale is a 3.25 LSD nine-inch centre as well.
The car has been fitted with an XC GXL sports dash (long story). The instrument panel isn’t working properly and I believe the problem could be the mother board which is a common XC problem. Interior is tidy but could be tidied up more if desired.
I have been on many local car club runs around my area, and the car is good for this however there are some issues with it that the next buyer needs to know about.
- There is a soft knock in the engine that comes and goes. Sometimes it hardly happens at all but it usually shows up at random times. I don’t believe it’s a bearing, as its never gotten any worse and only happens sometimes. It could be engine compression ‘knocking’ caused by the fact the 302 heads are fitted (old school guys will know what I’m talking about here) and I intended to fit 351 heads instead but never got that far. It doesn’t use oil and the knock only happens at idle and up to approx. 1000 rpm or so, then it goes away and the motor sounds sweet.
- The clutch slips at higher rpm. It was a used clutch when I fitted it so its probably worn clutch plates.
- The paint is good, however there are about four small moisture bubbles that have appeared on the bootlid, and a couple on the bonnet.
- The electrics problem with the gauges etc on the dash as mentioned before.
The car has no compliance plates, they were lost by the previous owner during a full-body repaint in the early 1990’s. I had no problem though registering it in 2013 in Qld using the chassis number stamped on the shock tower, the verification letter from Ford and proof of its original Qld registration. If you are an interstate buyer, I would recommend that you check your states rules on registering cars without plates, as they may vary.
It currently has Qld Club rego on it, which cannot be transferred, so will be sold as is, where is, with no rego or RWC. The personalised plates aren’t part of the sale.
There are other little things here and there on the car that could be tidied up and improved, that would be totally up to the new owner. However it is a beautiful car which turns heads and gets positive comments wherever it goes, making every drive a real thrill.
There is a swag of spare parts included, Cleveland motor with assorted 302 and 351 cranks, heads, and other bits. Spare 4 speed single rail, plus much more.
Price is $65000 inc spares, or $63,000 without. Strictly cleared bank cheque or funds transfer for payment. No holds while you apply for finance or sell your other car etc - first with the money gets the car.
If you follow these cars and know the prices they fetch nowdays, you'll see the value in this. The cost to get another to this stage would be much more to begin with. No silly offers. No swaps.
