Sydney Freelance Pattern Maker Yianni Zinonos
If youre manufactuering locally then i believe cardbaord patterns are bettter than computer patterns because they are physically your property. The patterns stay with you after the garments are made. You can change manufacturers and not have to start over again each time. Computer patternmaking services charge you a print out fee each time you need to cut. Your patterns are stuck in their hard drives. so they are controlling the situation.
If a factory overseas makes the patterns they belong to them even though youve paid for them. If i make your patterns they belong to you because you take them with you.
If you are manufacturing overseas, its important to ask the factories what they prefer ? most of them like to have spec sheets with sketches and measurements so they make the patterns. This process is tricky. If you send garments to be copied as is than thats ok. If you want changes and modifications or unusal designs, then getting overseas factories to do this many times is not correct. Thats why its good to get patterns done locally , test them out , fit them, develop your style, consult etc then post paper copies or email
the digitized copies.
after 36 years of working in fashion i still prefer cardbaord patterns because they are 3 dimensional and more accurate.
I dont like Computer patterns becasue they end up out of shape firstly in the digitization process, and or the scanning process then again the pattern looses its shape in the printing process they wobble out of shape. Thats why there are so many bad fitting garments out here made overseas.
Yes it does cost more to do make patterns in Australia, but you get alot more than that. I advise people on fabrics, designs , productions making co-ordinating. marketing and general business advice.
I deal with many small emerging start up fashion labels and i see what works, and what doesnt. You wont get any of that from a factory in India or China.
what i do is very consultant based.
I work from a nice converted shop space in Kingsford near Kensington.
I do womens and menswear but not childrens or swimwear.
I can also help people over the phone and online.
you can pre pay a block of time if we are doing things remotely
