Vintage 1950s Burgandy Dragonware Porcelain China Collectables
Each tea cup and sake cup have a lithophane of a Geisha when held to the light.
The Japanese tea sets with dragons all around and a geisha in the bottom of the cups were made from 1930 to 1960. Many sets were available to servicemen. The image of the geisha at the base of the cup is called a lithophane. It is formed by layering liquid porcelain before firing.
Moriage is a painstaking technique building up areas of enamel to produce a three-dimensional effect.
Satsuma porcelain is where the raised enamels are often gilded.
In the US these sets fetch very high prices for far fewer pieces than I have here.
The set is in good condition with no chips or cracks, but there is some inconsistency with colour.
