This design was originally for a mural in Mount Hawthorn. I've scaled it down, redrawn drawn it to a square format, then rendered it with zero-emission inks into 9mm thick lengths of locally sourced marine hardwood. I've then joined the lengths with a water-based PVA glue to form one image, and reinforced them at the rear with lengths of thicker timber. Measuring 118cm squared, it is drop-dead gorgeous, with the rugged grain of the timber coming through to make it look like it has been around

This happy piece started life as a commission for a client to go above a bedhead. Mother Nature has done her best work blending the blacks and reds of the cockatoos feathers. I then tweaked the colours in the branch to golden, as they might be at sunrise or set, reflecting the glow of the sun. This is my take on the classic Dutch still lifes of the 1600s. Using a 1660s original by Johann Walther as a base, I have stripped the patina and changed the colours before dialling them up. The background is a distressed blue-grey wash I picked up in the process then spread across the yellowing canvas. I've then rendered it into locally sourced timbers using zero-emission inks.
