Antique HWL Washup Wizard Brush & 1940s Washing Up Brush

Very old early 1900-1920s HWL Washup Wizard brush from back when wire soap sudsers were used in the kitchen - a genuine kitchen antique brush. The other version from the 1940-50s is also very retro as these appear to be a must for today's retro kitchens. The bristles on the antique version are much closer together and softer, possibly being horse mane or tail hair. The later version was "improved" because it spreads the bristles out further to cover more surface area in the brushing clean proce

Moneybox House; Antique Staffordshire Pottery

This quaint money box, in the form of a double-gabled house with clay ‘moss’ on the roof and beside the entrance stairs, is a piece of English Staffordshire pottery. Like the more-commonly-known pairs of antique ‘mantelpiece’ dogs, it is formed from press-moulded porcelain. The design has the drawback that the only way to retrieve money is through the slot in the rear of the roof. In consequence it has received some small chips around the coin slot in the past, presumably where coins have been

Fluted Antique Bud Vase; John Sherwood & Son, EPNS

This antique silver-plated bud vase has a slender elegance, a gracefully fluted top, and a heavy and ornately decorated base. It is 180 mm high, 60 mm in diameter at the base, and 70 mm diameter at the top. It was made by Birmingham platers John Sherwood & Sons. The company started around 1858 in Birmingham, following earlier incarnations of the family in the plating business, and operated there until 1913. The main company identifying mark was ‘J.S.& S.’ in a shield; but a beaver was also used

Rare Antique Pruning Secateurs Made in Birmingham C1913

These "Barrows Patented Pruners"/secateurs which were made by Burman & Sons Ltd in Birmingham, England over 100 years ago are very scarce probably because they are a mechanical marvel! The biggest plus is that they still work perfectly. Mechanical things were made to last in those days because the manufacturers had no concept of including obsolescence into what they made. The spring works, the closing catch works, the blade is sufficiently sharp, and it is a gardener's delight to have something

Vintage "Unique" Brand Cake Frosting/Icing Knife Possibly French Made

This would possibly be the longest frosting or icing knife/spatula you have ever seen. The brand is "UNIQUE" and another Gummie has suggested it is a French brand. The length of the knife/spatula is approximately 43cm of which the blade takes up nearly 30.5cm. The width of the blade is about 23mm. There is a little spotty tarnish on the blade but this does not detract from it's usefulness in spreading frosting, icing or cream on large cakes with ease. I bought it about 43 years ago in an antiqu

Vintage Australian Golf Union Brass Badge/Medallion

Postage is extra. Cash if picking up locally in Canberra. Cannot find anything out about this badge anywhere. It's dimensions are in inches because it was made using the imperial scale. It is 2 inches long, 1.5 inches wide and 1/8th of an inch thick. It weighs 63 grams. I found it in an all leather antique golf bag I purchased in Mittagong in 2005. It has "AUSTRALIAN GOLF UNION" (which became Golf Australia in 2006) underneath an embossed golfer at the end of a drive off a tee. On the reverse i

4 Vintage Long French Skewers with Soldered Brass Finials

Postage is extra. Cash if picking up locally in Canberra. These 1960-70s galvanised steel and brass skewers were purchased from an antique shop selling only vintage and antique French items. They range in length from 32 to 36 cms. The brass finials are soldered on to the galvanised steel rods and include a rabbit, fish, chicken and native with a huge headdress. There is no sign of rust and I would suggest they have never been used. I couldn't bring myself to spoil their appearance by using them

Antique 19th Century Tiny Leather Coin or Jewellery Purse

Postage is extra. Cash if picking up locally in Canberra. Well made, very old antique leather and chrome plated metal coin or jewellery purse. The inside of the the purse was originally silk-lined but this has deteriorated to such an extent that it would be better to pull it out if the purse was put into use rather than used as a display item. The clasp and frame are in very good condition but the leather could do with a little TLC by an expert restorer.

1900 Sterling Silver Crocodile Skin Purse with 9 Torquoise Studs

Antique crocodile skin purse hallmarked by William Hutton in London in 1900. It has sterling silver tabs on the corners of the front flap of the purse, each of which is inset with 3 torquoise studs. There is also a sterling silver tab in the middle of the flap with another 3 torquoise studs. This is the top of the purse's closing mechanism, the bottom part of which is also sterling silver. When I bought the purse, several of the torquoise studs were missing and so, I arranged for a jeweller t

Antique Crocodile and Sterling Silver Money Purse 1901

Postage is extra. Cash if picking up locally in Canberra. According to the Birmingham Assay Office, there was a Ludwig Krumm who registered an L.K, and perhaps an L•K as is seen on the silver frame of this crocodile skin purse from 1901 for items he made between 1896 to 1903. The lower case b indicates 1901-02. I don't know what the F means after the b although one theory is that it means foreign made. The purse is in good nick considering it's age. There are 2 tears in the very fine leather of

Antique (1880 to 1920) Manual Steel, Brass and Timber Handled Hedger

Rare and possibly unique antique manual trimmer/hedger which would have been made by a blacksmith some time between 1880 and 1920. It doesn't have any maker or manufacturer's mark but is extremely well made because it does the job it was intended for very well. Thank goodness, however, for the invention of petrol and electric motors which have saved gardeners from still having to use the labour intensive method involved with this contraption. It was intended for use in a right handed way by gra

Antique Clear Glass Medical Eye Bath from 19th Century

Postage is extra. Cash if picking up locally in Canberra. This medical clear glass eye bath is definitely from the 19th century. The style is consistent with that used for medical eye glasses during that century. While the glass is molded and not totally hand made, the mold lines are slightly raised or rougher than later molded glass and the glass contains bubbles which is also consistent with that period. It is 5.5cm high and 4cm across long ways at the top of the cup. There is a small pimple

Antique 4 Piece French Silver and Silverplate Hors D'Oeuvre Set C1880

Postage is extra. Cash if picking up locally in Canberra. 4 piece antique French hors d'oeuvres set made around 1880. The handles are silverplated with perhaps some steel content under the plating because they stick to a magnet. However, the neck and heads of the trident fork, the slotted spoon, the pate knife and the slotted server are, I believe, made of silver. They are totally unaffected by a strong magnet. There are two stamped marks on the front of the heads of each of these hors d'oeuvre

Vintage 4-Piece Fr Hors D'Oeuvres Set with Ornate Metal Blanc Handles

Postage is extra. Cash if picking up locally in Canberra. Antique French hors d'oeuvres set of four pieces in a style made between about 1880 to 1900. The ornate handles are "metal blanc" which means silverplate but it doesn't necessarily mean epns as the English know it. Normally, English epns or nickel silver is composed of a combination of copper, nickel and zinc which is then electronically plated with silver. Epns is only very slightly magnetic (whereas sterling silver isn't). I check by b

4 Antique Sterling Silver Bone-Handled Forks 1908

4 antique faux bone-handled sterling silver forks made by R. F. Morley & Co in Sheffield, England in 1908. I haven't found out much about R F Morley & Co except that they were registered in the Sheffield Assay Office in 1886 (page 451 of Jackson's Silver and Gold Marks). They are probably a cake, cheese or salad fork due to their smaller size. The price doesn't include any postage or handling costs. Cash if local pickup in Canberra.
