  • Common FAQs
  • The Ford Laser isn't built for towing and has a minimal braked towing capacity of between 500 kg and 720 kg. If you require a small car with a bigger towing capacity, you might consider a Hyundai i30 with a braked towing capacity of up to 1,600 kg.
  • According to data based on simulations, a 2002 Ford Laser LXi can theoretically reach a top speed of 186 km/hour, and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hour in 11.3 seconds.
  • Ford ceased production of the Laser in 2002 and replaced it with the Ford Focus. Older models of the Ford Laser still on the market are aged and therefore inexpensive, costing between $1,000 and $4,000.
  • A Ford Laser GLXi's fuel-injected 1.8-litre power plant generates 92kW maximum power with 163Nm in torque. Its stablemate, the TX3 Turbo 4WD does less with more, generating 100kW of maximum power and 184Nm of torque from its turbo charged 1.6-litre engine.
  • The Ford Laser was a popular small car in its day, and with Mazda mechanics, it had a reputation for reliability. There are still plenty of Ford Lasers for sale in Australia that have travelled more than 200,000km.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR: FORD LASER (1999-2002)

The very last Ford Laser went from a locally-made car to an imported one using mostly Mazda 323 mechanical parts.

As such, it's actually quite a reliable car although any vehicle as old as this one must be bought on its own merits - and making broad reliability statements is a risky business.

So, make sure the engine starts easily, idles smoothly and doesn't blow any smoke. Manual-transmission versions should shift cleanly and smoothly with no crunching between gears (especially first and second).

Neither manual nor automatic Lasers should shudder or vibrate during a take-off from the lights and the clutch shouldn't slip in a higher gear going up a hill at highway speeds.

Make sure the temperature gauge stays in the safe zone during the test drive and listen for clicks and clunks during full-lock U-turns as a sign of worn CV joints in the front driveshafts.
