HOLDEN CREWMAN Used Car Review

Pros

Cons

  • Unique model: Car-like ute with four-door practicality
  • Cross 6 / Cross 8 models offered modicum of off-road ability
  • Effortless, torquey V8 engine
  • Good load capacity (6cyl); good towing capacity (Cross 8)
  • Basic suspension didn't deliver great ride comfort
  • All-wheel drive added weight
  • Thirsty, especially Cross 8
  • Cramped rear cabin and poor rear vision

Has clear peel on the roof and the front bumper is aittle ordinary, the paint on the rest of the car is pretty clean. Mainly after swaps for a patrol May trade for other cars send me what you've got worst I can say is no.

Expression of interest Up for swaps is my AWD cross6 V6 auto. Wanting to swap for a space cab or dual cab to be better suited to weekend hobbies. Comes with a soft top plus original bonnet and tailgate which came as “spares” when I purchased it. Air con and heating work great. Mechanically A1. Paint it’s the best but isn’t too bad as shown in photos. Feel free to send a message.

  • Common FAQs
  • Holden sold the Crewman in Australia between 2003 and 2007. Despite being more than ten years old, there are plenty of Holden Crewman's available. Prices range from approximately $4,400 to $10,000 on Gumtree.
  • The Holden Crewman is a cross between a ute and a car, providing room for passengers and load-carrying potential. The Holden Crewman Cross 6 and Cross 8 versions have all-wheel drive capability. The number of older Holden Crewman's available with more than 150,000km on the clock, including some more than 300,000 km, indicates its longevity potential.
  • The Holden Crewman s, the base model, gives 175 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. Performance increases to the top-of-the-range Holden Crewman Cross 8, which delivers 260 kW of power and 510 Nm of torque.
  • The Holden Crewman is not a vehicle you would purchase for fuel economy. The 3.6 L V6 engine consumes 12.7 L/100 km, whereas the 6.0 L V8 engine is thirstier, consuming 14.8 L/100 km.
  • The braked towing capacity of the Holden Crewman ranges from 2,100kg to 2,500kg, depending on the model and year. By comparison, the Ford Territory of the same era (2000-07) has a braked towing capacity of 2,300kg.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR: HOLDEN CREWMAN (2003-2007)

V8 versions of the Crewman need a close check of the engine for worn out hydraulic lifters, valve springs and rocker bearings.

A ticking noise from the engine on start-up is the first sign of trouble and while you're in there, check for oil leaks, particularly around where the engine joins the transmission.

On VZ (later) model Crewmans, the big issue is timing-chain stretch which affects the V6 engine. A rattle when the engine is cold or is revved and returns to idle is a pretty good indication that this problem is present. A new timing chain is the fix, but it's a big job.

And like any work-oriented vehicle, make sure the Crewman in question hasn't been worked to death by a previous owner.
