Gumtree community policing

Gumtree is a community site and we rely on your feedback to help shape the site and keep it friendly, safe, up to date and relevant for everyone. We like to think of it as you, the Gumtree community, policing the site and keeping out the bad guys.

While the vast majority of Gumtree users have great success buying, selling, renting or connecting with others, from time to time we do receive reports of people attempting to scam or defraud users. We have found that one of the best ways to address this problem is to ensure that all transactions take place locally and in person.

However, if you find an ad on Gumtree that you think is illegal, a scam or fraudulent you can report to us by clicking on the ‘Report Ad’ button featured on every ad on Gumtree. Reporting a suspicious ad brings it to our attention so that we can review and, if necessary, take it down quickly.

If you reply to an ad and you get a suspicious request from the poster of the ad (e.g. asks for money to be sent to them via a payment service), please forward the email to us at ‘spoof@gumtree.com.au’ and stop all communications with that person.

If you experience harassment or abuse in connection to either an ad on Gumtree or an email received from a Gumtree user then please report it to us. You can also forward the details to the sender’s email account provider (i.e., Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL).

We do not tolerate harassment or abuse of Gumtree users and we take reports of this nature very seriously. If you have any other security questions that aren’t answered above, please contact us.

Reporting an incident to the police

If you’ve been defrauded or think you’ve discovered stolen goods, we recommend that you contact your local police to report the incident. The police will decide if the incident should be investigated.

Before you go to the police you should collect the following evidence:

  • Essential details such as the nature, date and time of the offence, and the name and contact details of the victim and suspect(s)
  • Any email exchanges between you and the other person
  • If relevant, the ad reference number of a printed copy of the Gumtree ad

In the event that the police decide to pursue the incident, they will contact us and we’ll provide them with any information that may assist their investigation.
