Antique 19th Cent. English 'Newcastle Bell' pillar mould decanter
$125
Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century English hand-blown pillar mould ‘Newcastle Bell’ lead glass decanter, most likely dating from the 1850’s. Amazing to think this was created when the Australian Gold Rush was at its height!
What stands this piece out from other examples is it demonstrates an excellent example of Japanese ‘Wabi Sabi’ repair practice, as at some point in its early history the initial stopper has become damaged. Given it would have been very expensive to replace, rather than throw the decanter away its owner had a replacement top riveted to the original stopper base (which fits and nips up well, so is not a ‘marriage’ pairing). The riveting work has involved three pins and a custom metal collar being formed. A fascinating, unique example of a long-forgotten tradesperson’s skill - the result is deeply interesting from an aesthetic and social history perspective.
The body of the decanter itself has no cracks, chips or damage – amazing at being over 170 years old.
Measures 29cm (high, with stopper) x 13cm (diameter, at base) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
