2 x Antique/Vintage 18th/19th Century Japanese ukiyo-e by Harunobu
$170
SHIPPING OFFERED
Offered for sale is this pair of antique/vintage 19th/20th Century Japanese original ukiyo-e woodblock prints, first created by Suzuki Harunobu (*****1770) in the Edo Period. Both are estimated to date from the 1800’s to 1930’s (so not first editions). Harunobu is considered one the greatest innovators and masters of the ukiyo-e art form, having produced the first full-colour woodblocks in 1765. Little is known about his personal life, however (somewhat unusually) he used his real name when publishing - and ground-breakingly chose to depict scenes of daily street/urban life (often with a slightly ‘knowing’ or comical social-observational edge) rather than purely classical imagery. He was also one of the most well-known producers of bijin-ga (beautiful women), and during his lifetime is high-quality works and techniques inspired many imitators and contemporaries.
The first is titled, ‘Crow and heron, or young lovers walking together under and umbrella in the snowstorm’ (circa 1769). Depicting a scene from this classical Japanese myth of concealment and revelation, it shows a man and woman strolling through a snowy, treed landscape. Their left and right hands intertwine and support the umbrella handle, almost touching – indicating their mutual support of/interest in each other and perhaps adding a slight frison with the potential of touch leading to something more. Of particular interest is the use of embossing to cleverly detail her white kimono and simulate the surface of fallen snow. There is some fading and light foxing.
The second is known as, ‘Courtesan standing on an engawa’ (circa 1767-68). Its central figure is a lone geisha, standing outside on the engawa (verandah) and gazing across a tsubo-niwa (indoor garden); whilst behind shōji panels, two other geisha entertain a guest by playing the shaminsen and conducting a tea ceremony. This enigmatic image offers opportunity to consider the scene in greater detail – just some questions could be: why is she waiting? Is she in training to be a geisha, and listening in as a way to learn? Who is the guest? This print also features the use of embossing to detail folds on her white kimono. There is some fading.
Upon inspection for photography, each was (importantly) found to have not been cut-down for framing (and therefore some printers marks remain) and remain bordered by their original rice-paper. The frames have some occasional light marking from storage.
Each measures (framed) 37cm (h) x 32.5cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.
