Antique late-19th/Early-20th Cent. carved Chinese wood panel Feng Sui
$85
SHIPPING OFFERED
Offered for sale is antique/vintage late-19th/early-20th Century Chinese relief-carved wooden panel, estimated as dating from the 1890’s to 1930’s. It would have original formed a part of a larger hanging panel or room divider.
The design features classical Chinese, Taoist and Buddhist symbolism inferring strong energy, good luck, wisdom/intellectual power and health. Its central figure depicts Zhu Bajie on Buddhist clouds. He is also known as The Pig God or 豬八戒), famous as one of the characters from the classical Ming Dynasty novel ‘Journey to the West’ (or ‘Monkey’). Western audiences (of a certain age) might recognise him as the character ‘Pigsy’ in the popular 1980’s Japanese TV show ‘Monkey Magic’. Possibly based on an actual Han Dynasty Buddhist monk (Zhu Shixing) who brought various sutras back to China, Zhu Bajie is associated with passionate excess as well as having positive qualities such as being big-hearted, respectful and optimistic.
The designer of this panel has deliberately sought to balance such a powerfully energetic figure with more scholarly and intellectual elements for guidance. Framing both Zhu’s sides are large stylised peony flowers - representing wealth and prosperity. To his far right is an oversize scholar’s brushpot (symbolising studiousness, hard work and nature reverence/worship). On the far left is a large pedestal (decorated with an archaic Buddhist symbol wishing health/luck) and bonsai flower blossom held in a decorated vase – this again refers to the scholarly classical Chinese pursuit of nature observation as a way to heavenly contemplation and spiritual guidance.
A charming decorative item for any home or business, with its positive Feng Sui energy.
At some point in its history it has been framed separately from its original cabinetry, as well as having the exterior paint finished removed. The reverse has been covered with a thick black coating which has heavily patinated.
In very good original condition. There are some very small loses and patination, as expected from an antique/vintage item and not modern reproduction.
Measures (framed) 21cm (h) x 56.5cm (w) x 2cm (d) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.
