Nakamichi BX-2 Cassette Deck
$495 Negotiable
Nakamichi was renowned for producing the first 3-head cassette decks in the mid 1970s which retailed for $4000 to $6000. By the early 1980s they decided to use the technology from the earlier machines and produce consumer cassette decks, and this is one of them. I purchased this machine in 1983, 31 July, as I have the original receipt. CDs first came out that year, so the cassette playing industry took a hit, but what a great machine this is.
The BX-2 is a 2 head machine with both Dolby B and C. It has a relatively unique drive mechanism where a series of switch cams provide the tape transport functions using the 3 motors involved. Only one pretty wide and thick belt is involved in all the tape transport functions.
1983 was in the early years of Dolby C noise reduction, and made a huge difference in reducing background noise. This deck has an output volume control and the cassette chamber cover is easily removed to allow servicing the heads, roller and capstan. I used TDK SA tapes mainly.
The deck, Serial number 39794, which I have owned and used for almost 40 years, comes with a 20 page Owner's Manual in 3 languages and an 8 page colour brochure which includes all the features of this BX-2 and its smaller brother the BX-1. It is set for 220-240 V and has an Australian plug.
You won't find many of these units around, and this one has great provenance and is in good shape. Recently serviced, heads cleaned and demagnetised.
For local pickup or agreed transport costs.
