In all the decades that cassette recorders and Hi-Fi cassette decks have been available we’ve never seen a user manual that didn’t cover the fact that in such devices the heads and tape path must be regularly cleaned of the oxide build-up that is inevitable from use. Unfortunately the vast majority of owners seem to ignore those instructions entirely, and just keep playing tape after tape, with the high frequency response eventually degrading to the point where music and speech just merges into a mish-mash of “muffled” sound! Some folk are even happy to let it go further to the point where there’s so much build-up on the capstan and pinch roller that tapes start creasing and chewing.
In the halcyon days of the format “cleaning tapes” were readily available, in two basic formats. The first was a “dry” version that actually cleaned using an abrasive tape inside the case – these should be avoided at all costs. If you come across one bin it.
The second technology was “wet” cleaners like this one – a cloth tape on which you dropped some head cleaning fluid (or readily available Isopropyl Alcohol), then inserted in the machine and pressed play for 30 seconds or so. As the wet cloth tape passed the heads, guides, capstan and pinch roller the oxidants are hopefully dissolved / loosened by the fluid, and they transfer to the cloth tape. The cleaner can be used many times, but we would suggest replacing when the cloth tape becomes very visibly stained with tape residue and oxide build-up to maintain peak effectiveness.
We still believe the very best solution for maintaining top performance is to manually clean your heads / capstan / tape guides / pinch roller / auto-stop sensing finger etc. with alcohol (and even sell swabs for that purpose), but that’s not always an easy option. For those cases a wet cleaning cassette like this new product is your best option!
