Banana tree Ladies Fingers
Advanced banana trees 3m to 4m for $40. Now available. Also small ones from $10 each. Good time to plant, grwing season Aug to May
Banana trees produce large leaves that give their planting area a tropical look. “Lady Finger” banana trees (Musa acuminate “Lady Finger”) produce sweet, edible, cigar-shaped fruit with thin skins. This variety of banana tree is also disease-resistant. Depending on the variety of “Lady Finger” banana, this tree can be grown in a container or in a sunny location in the yard. These banana trees are grown as ornamentals with the added bonus of producing 4- to 5-inch-long snack-sized fruit.
Growing Conditions
“Lady Finger” banana trees need full sun exposure and as much warmth as possible. They grow well when planted near buildings where heat is commonly trapped. They grow best when protected from wind, which can shred their large green leaves. Wind protection stops them from blowing over; this is necessary as the trees become top-heavy when the fruit bunches appear.
Soil
This variety of banana tree requires rich, organic material added to the soil. Suitable soil contains plenty of compost. Good-draining soil keeps the roots from being water-logged and prevents root rot, and ensure you test the soil acidity before planting. “Lady Finger” banana trees need a pH range of 5.5 and 6.5 to properly take up nutrients through the roots. This plant is a heavy feeder and needs fertilizing once a month with balanced fertilizer. Recommend chicken manure for nitrogen and grey water from washing machine for phosphorus. Avoid fertilizers with heavy salts because this banana plant does not tolerate salty soil. Feed container-grown plants with half-strength fertilizer once a month.
