Clarice Cliff Spring Crocus Bizarre Lidded Tureen & Serving Platter
$210
SHIPPING OFFERED
A stunning Clarice Cliff Spring Crocus Bizarre hand painted lidded tureen and serving platter from Newport Pottery with vibrant pink, yellow and blue crocus flowers set against a mid green and aqua border, in great condition.
By age 17 Clarice Cliff was working at the Royal Staffordshire Pottery owned by AJ Wilkinson. During the mid 1920s she began designing for Wilkinsons and was given her own studio. In 1928 she produced the hand painted pattern of Crocus flowers in orange, blue and purple. Each flower was constructed with confident upward strokes and then green leaves were added by holding the piece upside down and painting thin lines amongst the flowers.
Because of the great success of her Autumn Crocus, colour variations were created including Spring Crocus in 1933. In 1942, when the Newport Pottery closed due to WW2, production largely ceased and the remaining operations were concentrated at the Royal Staffordshire Pottery.
These dinnerware pieces have the colouring of Spring Crocus but are often just termed Crocus. In excellent vintage condition with no visible crazing, they are marked Newport Pottery Co / England / Made in England. As production had largely ceased by 1942 at Newport these are likely 1933 - 1941. Many pieces of Clarice Cliff pottery are not fully stamped at this time and entire sets of dinnerware often show only one fully marked piece.
Measurements: Large oval platter: 37cm long x 28cm wide x 5 cm deep.
Lidded tureen / serving bowl: 27cm at widest point x 23.5cm wide x 12.5cm tall with lid.
Where the lid rests over the painted ring of the tureen there is minor paint loss (see photos.)
A fresh and bright rare Spring Crocus set in unusually good condition.
Also listed elsewhere.
Prefer pick-up but can post very well packaged with Australia Post if required.
