Extract from 'Minton - the first two hundred years of design and production' 1993: ‘
Byzantine' was supplied in a choice of ground colours; blue, green, pink and hazel brown. These underglaze powder-coloured grounds were stippled and immersed in an acid bath to dull the colours. Then prints were applied which were filled in by hand with harmonising enamel colours, outlined in gold…’Byzantine’ borders comprised half-suns with triangles and the centres were stylised floral arrangements in an octagonal surround….artistic perfection has been attained'.
Appears to have been a cabinet display item as in exceptional condition, with no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. It measures: 9cm high and 26.5cm in diameter. Stamped on base with Mintons’ Globe Mark (c.1912-50) in pink plus green hand painted numerals E4579 or E4576? Etched initials M/s. A very rare beautiful bowl.
