JOHNSON BROS WILLOW TABLEWARE SIDE-PLATES - Set 3
$45
I have four (4) lots of the famous Johnson Bros. Willow pattern tableware or dinner crockery sets that I am putting up for sale. These will be in 4 separate advertisements on this site.
Founded by Frederick and Alfred Johnson in 1883, the brothers were actually the grandsons of renowned English potter, Alfred Meakin, which no doubt helped to stir up interest in their new pottery venture.
In the 1950’s Johnson Bros. earned Royal Warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother for award-winning high-quality designs that had become widely popular.
In 1968, Johnson Bros. became a partner with the rapidly developing Wedgwood Group. With this partnership, came some of the most popular patterns to be produced in the succeeding years.
In the early 2000’s, there was a temporary move and transfer of their tableware division to J & G Meakin (part of the Waterford Wedgwood Group) at the Eagle Pottery Works in England.
But in 2003 production in the UK of Johnson Bros. ceased altogether as manufacturing moved to China. The end of an era.
The Eagle Pottery Works was demolished in 2005 and in 2015, following the acquisition of Waterford Wedgwood by Finnish company Fiskars, the Johnson Bros. brand was discontinued.
This is a set of 9 bread & butter (side) plates each of 180mm diameter. There are no cracks or chips in any of the pieces and they are in excellent USED condition.
I have supplied photos to show the back/under-side of sample pieces to validate the pieces are all the same generation of Willow from Johnson Bros. Seven (7) of the plates carry the “Royal Crown and Ironstone” logo while two (2) of the plates carry the logo and words stating “Dishwasher Freezer and Microwave Safe”.
The seven (7) plates with the Royal Crown logo are probably made in England and could date from the mid 1940s to 1990s as Johnson Bros. was one of the world's largest manufacturers of ironstone tableware during this period.
The two (2) plates with the statement for “Dishwasher Safe etc” are some of the last products made by Johnson Bros. and were manufactured in China between 2003 – 2015.
The side plates in the set includes:
7 x bread & butter (side) plates of 180mm diameter (probably made in England 1940s - 1990s)
2 x bread & butter (side) plates of 180mm diameter (made in China 2003 - 2015)
The Willow pattern is an identical match to the other two sets of Willow pattern tableware from Johnson Bros. that I have listed on this site.
Check out the other Johnson Bros. Willow pattern crockery pieces I have on this site.
The plates can be collected from an address in Indooroopilly/Chapel Hill, just off Moggill Road.
