$40
☆☆ ORIGINAL V.T.C. KS KEY - REDPHONE RED PHONE PAY PAYPHONE VICTA TELECOMMUNICATIONS Co Pty Ltd☆☆
The KS (Key Switch) enabled the operator to make calls without depositing coins.
The KS keys numbered from 0 to 9 and 11 to 40 (40 key combinations).
I have key 21 but I also have many others – contact me if you’re after a particular number and I’ll check let you know if I have it.
YOU GET ONE VTC KS KEY.
The KS key number for the phone can be identified by looking at the bracket (see photo) or the back of the lock (you may have to take the lock out). Early redphones (pre 1975) had the the number stamped on the front of the lock (top RHS) - so look at the front of the lock, through the key hole. If you’re close, you can bring the phone round and I can work the number out for you. Best to check both to be sure.
I will sort out any issues if you get stuck.
This key is 100% ORIGINAL new old stock from the VICTA telecommunications company.
The KS key is about 50 years old and has never been used.
DON’T MESS AROUND WITH COPIES THAT DON’T LOOK THE PART LOWER THE APPEAL AND VALUE OF THE PHONE.
RED PHONE BACKGROUND INFO
The Victa/Red phone had 3 keys. The H key (Housing) to get to the guts, the C key (Coin compartment) and the KS key (Key Switch). VICTA supplied all 3 key types.
The Victa Red phone came into being when the PMG approved their use in 1963. They were imported by Victa Telecommunications Co. Pty. Ltd (V.T.C.) - owned by the lawnmower mob. The red phone went through 6 prototypes to get the final approval from the PMG.
The phones were very successful and competed directly with the PMG public payphones.
The red phone was used for local telephone calls and were normally barred to STD/Trunk calls because they could not multimeter. The held coin/s were deposited into the coin tin when the call was answered and a line reversal was applied from the exchange. However, some redphones had STD access and that's what the KS key was used for. STD = Subscriber Trunk Dialing.
In 1972/3, the PMG started negotiations with VTC to purchase the operation (a rather one way negotiation I reckon).
The VTC buyout was finalized in 1975 when the PMG became Telecom.
The phones were upgraded and rebadged as the RED PHONE from 1975 onwards.
The local call tariff was increased from 7 cents to 10 cents in 1975.
Hence, you will only find “VICTA” badged red phones with 6D & 7c denominations.
“RED PHONE” badged (Telecom) red phones had 7c, 10c, 20c, 30c and the locally modified 40c denominations.
The RED PHONE was superseded by the GOLD PHONE (used for local STD calls – 50Hz multimetering) in 1983 but continued to operate into the 90's (aka the "local" 40c mod). Indeed, refurbished red phones were used when the demand for gold phones exceeded the gold phone manufacture rate. The red phone was replaced later on when a gold phone was available.
The VICTA/RED PHONE came with a pair of V.T.C. "KS" keys and a pair of "C" keys - used by the operator.
The "H" key was held and used by PMG/TELECOM (VICTA supplied the keys) to service the phone. VICTA had a maintenance contract with the PMG to maintain the red phones. The maintenance contract was one of the conditions required for PMG approval to operate the red phone on the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).
The use of leased private payphones started to decline when mobile phones became more affordable.
The mobile phone network (AMPS) was switched on to the first 2000 customers in 1981.
GOOD LUCK!
