Rare copy of the May 1951 edition of British Vogue with a Clifford Coffin cover photo of model Jean Patchett in a bold check cotton sun dress worn with Charles of the Ritz Bronze lipstick on a sunny yellow background. This is a 184 page 'Travel Number' featuring a 16 page fashion spread of summer holiday clothes shot on location in South Africa with stunning Norman Parkinson photos of his wife the model Wenda Parkinson. Other spreads include a trousseau for the 'Bride on a Budget' with Don Honeyman photos of model Susan Abraham, gorgeous Christian Dior and Jacques Fath evening dresses in photos by John Rawlings, a Royal fashion show with Norman Parkinson photos of extravagant evening gowns by Norman Hartnell and outfits for 'The Season' in photos and drawings.
The beauty pages have Irving Penn photos of the models Lisa Fonssagrives and Mary Jane Russell and the travel pages have fascinating period info and tips on the resorts, hotels, restaurants and holiday attractions of the French Cote d’Azur including St Tropez. 1951 was the year of the iconic Festival of Britain and there is a feature on famous artistic figures involved in the event including the sculptors Jacob Epstein and Henry Moore and the writer T. S. Eliot with memorable black and white portrait photos by Irving Penn. Plus lots of lovely full page early 1950s colour and black and white adverts, some of which also reference the Festival. There is also an interesting small ad for Lacto-Calamine lotion with an Angus McBean photo of Audrey Hepburn in her pre-acting days.
The magazine is complete, intact and in very good vintage condition with light age wear to the covers. There is a bit of paper loss on the spine and around the outer edge of the back cover but the binding is tight and secure and the contents are clean. Please examine all the photos carefully and contact me if you have any questions. Pick up from Kensington NSW 2033 in Sydney Eastern Suburbs.
