It was made in the historic Hawkesbury district of NSW around 1850 & it is presented in original condition. It is a prime example of early Australian furniture. All timbers are Hawkesbury Red Cedar with no secondary timbers employed. It has been made by hand with no machinery (various hand saws, adze, planes & scrapers). It was commissioned by the Roman Catholic Church (St. Augustine's Balmain) to be made by Sydney cabinetmakers Alex W. It shows two original ink on paper labels "HENRY WOOLLEY Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer, & Decorator 419, GEORGE-ST., SYDNEY". A label has been applied to the inside of each door. This particular label, showing the address of 419 George Street, represented the workshop trading period 1851 to 1853.
