The painter Heinrich Purnhage (1909 - 1970)
In search of a forgotten artist: The Bissendorf Heimat- und Wanderverein even founded a working group. They interviewed contemporary witnesses and consulted the art author and journalist Oliver Koerner von Gustorf from Berlin in order to track down a local phenomenon: Heinrich (Heinz) Purnhage, a landscape painter who lived in Holsten-Mündrup from 1950 – 1959. In the 1950s, his paintings were ubiquitous in the region. Countless pictures were acquired by the local population and are still hanging in many houses today.
The exhibition “The Longing for Harmony” tells a piece of contemporary history. The son of a greengrocer from Osnabrück felt not only stylistically indebted to the landscape painting of the 19th century, but also represented the dying genre of the "peasant painter" who made wall decorations and commissioned work for the living room of the population and sold his works to art dealers and in pubs or exchanged for natural produce and alcohol.
It stands in the tradition of Hans Thoma (1839 - 1924) from the Black Forest, who met popular tastes in the Wilhelminian era and also during National Socialism with his home idylls and mountain landscapes. Like Thoma, Purnhage found art through need - he had to paint in order to make a living for his family. And he, too, completely ignored the academic canon of motifs of his time and drew his picture ideas preferably from his home environment.
While modern art of the 1950s was primarily determined by abstraction, Purnhage painted in an almost old-master manner. Many of his paintings not only take up elements of romantic German landscape painting or Carl Spitzweg, but are also reminiscent of 17th century Dutch landscape painting, for example by Jacob van Ruisdael (1628 - 1682). As the economic miracle began, Purnhage satisfied the longing for an idealized home and an unbroken identity. He succeeded in doing some amazingly artistic works. The Germany he painted was, however, also a product of repression - unrealistic and devoid of history. Purnhage, who took his easel to the fields for his plein air painting, removed all references to the present, factory chimneys or high-voltage pylons - and people too - from his otherwise realistic pictures.
