Cedar Chest of Drawers - James Lawson 1883

Offered for sale is a fine Cedar Chest of Drawers.
It was made by Sydney cabinetmaker James Lawson who was renowned for producing furniture of the finest quality.
It exhibits two paper labels which determines the date of manufacture to be between 1880 & 1883. A further cutting from a newspaper drawer lining shows the date of January 8 1883 & this is considered to be the date of delivery.
A reference to the maker's label may be found in "19th Century Australian Furniture by Fahey, Simpson & Simpson Fig 170 P233.
This is a chest that would satisfy the most discerning collector or furnisher. The quality of build is exceptional. Conscientious, precision work.
It presents in flawless condition. It is original without modification, repair, rot or borer. Not one nail or screw has been touched since it's manufacture.
The drawer runners & slides show no wear at all & this was achieved by the strategic employment of non abrasive running timbers.
The interior dust boards, framing & backboards are impeccably clean. The exterior finish is untouched & it is clean. It has never been repolished or interfered with in any way. It has a good colour & a mellow patina. The structure is rigid with no movement & all glue blocks are intact.
The hardware was imported from England. The "all brass" lever locks are stamped C & T London & the original supplied C & T iron key is included. The mahogany knobs are original & were made by John Dixon & Sons Leeds England. They were the finest available at the time. Each screw pin is stamped "Dixon's Patented".
All external timbers are solid Australian Cedar, the drawer linings are Douglas Fir & the 18" backboards are Kauri Pine. No veneer. Each board has been specifically selected for it's position & purpose within the chest. The top & each of the sides are single, matching boards with no joins & no separation of grain. The drawer fronts are continuous grain boards from top to bottom.
Dimensions are symmetrical at 44" wide, 44" tall & 20" deep.
