Courthouse Robe Circa 1885 - Original Condition
$2,000
SHIPPING OFFERED
Offered for sale is a genuine Courthouse Robe / Chamber Robe which was made in Sydney around 1885.
It is stamped & numbered by Eveleigh Works & the rococo brass handles are cast in Birmingham & show a registration number that dates to 1885.
It presents in original, unmodified condition.
The finish is original & has not been tampered with. Timbers employed are Hoop Pine, Cedar & Douglas Fir. It is structurally sound with no movement in any joint. There is no evidence of borer activity, rot or damage. All hardware remains in undamaged, original condition & all brass robe hooks are present. The brass & iron lock operates perfectly & it is complete with an original 19th Century forged, filligree iron key. The construction is typical 19th Century NSW Government. The side boards are one piece slabs - which have no splits. The interior is clean & original. The original paper court label, which was badly damaged at the time of my purchase, has been carefully removed. Only feint evidence is left of the black tar adhesive (to the bottom left of the backboards).
Dimensions are traditional at 88" in height, 48" in width & 22" in depth. These robes were used to hang the coats, capes, hats, wigs & footwear of the dignitaries of the courthouse.
This is an alternative for the decorator or collector who requires something more exciting than a domestic, period wardrobe.
With the addition of shelving, it can be easily converted to a bookcase & serve as a valuable addition to a legal practice.
Further detailed photos are available.
Delivery is available to Sydney & surrounding areas.
