What is Waxed Canvas fabric?
We have gritty, seafaring men to thank for developing one of the oldest materials in the world still used today: waxed canvas (also called waxed cotton or waxed cotton duck). Centuries ago, sailors noticed their sails caught better wind when wet. But wet sails are heavy sails—so, resourceful Scottish sailors in the mid-19th century discovered they could cure the sail fabric with the application of linseed oil. This allowed the fabric to receive water on the surface, but not soak in. After discovering the many fine qualities of waxed canvas for sails, it didn’t take long until these resourceful sailors were making waterproof jackets and pants using offcuts from the old sails.
In the 1930s, the application of linseed oil was replaced with a new process: rather than applying linseed oil to the surface of the canvas, the cotton cloth was impregnated with paraffin wax. This produced a waxed canvas that remained highly water resistant, but more breathable and less stiff.
After its initial creation and use at sea, waxed canvas spread to military applications. Being waterproof, waxed canvas was the fabric of choice for clothing the British Armed Forces during World War II, resulting in Britain having the only military with waterproof clothing. Moving forward, armed forces utilized waxed canvas for uniforms, tents, and duffles because of its durability, comfort, and water resistance
Today waxed canvas comes in two forms, plain and duck. With duck canvas the threads are more tightly woven and consequently it is stronger. Waxed canvas is produced by impregnating the canvas fibres with waxes and oils. The quality and strength of canvas is determined by the thickness of the yarn and the density of the weave. Most waxed canvas is created using a paraffin-based wax but there are also hybrid waxes which use paraffin and fluorocarbon to improve water proofing.
How does Wax Canvas age?
One of the features of waxed canvas which has resulted in its increasing use in fashion accessories is the attractive way in which it ages. Like full grain leather its appearance improves with age, making it a unique personal accessory. Scuffs, marks and creases create a rich patina which continues to develop with age.
How to clean Waxed Canvas
As a result of its water repellent qualities waxed canvas also repels dirt. Dust and dirt will not penetrate waxed canvas and can simply be removed with a brush or damp cloth. A stained area of waxed canvas can be washed using cold water and a gentle soap. Do not put waxed canvas articles in the washing machine and always allow them to dry naturally.
