Here's a bit of history about these phones...
Design began in 1961 on a new telephone that was to be designed and built in Australia. It was to have better transmission over long lines and better reliability. The result was the PMG 801 telephone, which was made by the Post Master General in Australia and released to the public in January, 1963. It was the standard phone in Australian homes during the 1960s and 1970s. The Post Office charged a premium of $8 to change from a Bakelite phone to an 800 series, and a surprising number of people were happy to pay for a stylish new telephone. The colours were Light Ivory, Mist Grey, Fern Green, Topaz Yellow, and Lacquer Red. Black was added to the range later.
Parts were supplied by AWA, STC, and the Australian Post Office workshops. Initially dials were not made in Australia, so they were imported from European suppliers. They were the British Post Office BPO Dial No. 21 and Belgian BTM71708 and BTM71816. Because of the different dial layouts, it was necessary to supply each with an adapter ring to fit the basic 800 shell. The adapter ring carried the number around the outside of the dial, and this series was designated PMG 801. Some years later, when supplies of Australian-made dials became available, the adapter was discarded, and the case was remolded to only fit the new standard dial. This had the numbers underneath the dial finger holes, and this new series was designated PMG 802.
