Cape Gooseberry / Inca berry
Physalis peruviana
Pick up in Tewantin, Sunshine Coast, QLD
These are seedling grown plants of the variety "Golden Nugget", which produces some of the largest fruit. They grow great on the Sunshine Coast. It is hardy and heavy bearing and fruits very fast.
A plant species of the genus Physalis is originally from Peru. The plant and its fruit are most commonly known as Cape gooseberry.
The fruit is a smooth berry, resembling a yellow cherry tomato. It is about the size of a marble, about 1–2 cm in diameter. Like a tomato, it contains numerous small seeds which are edible. it is sweet when ripe, with a characteristic mildly tangy flavour. It is ideal eaten fresh or used in pies, or jams. It is relished in salads and fruit salads, sometimes combined with avocado. Also, because of the fruit's decorative appearance, it is popular in restaurants as an exotic garnish for desserts.
A prominent feature is the inflated, papery calyx enclosing each berry. The calyx forms a protective cover around the growing fruit which keeps fruit fly at bay. If the fruit is left inside the intact calyx husks, its shelf life at room temperature is about 30 days.
Grow these under exclusion netting to prevent beetle damage over spring-summer, or prune it back and wait for winter fruit.
