The Edible Leaves
Pandanus grass is often used to flavour rice in many Asian dishes. It has a beautiful aromatic scent which is reminiscent of a nutty caramel / vanilla flavour. Use it to flavour coconut rice or sticky rice, or you can use it to impart a basmati like fragrance to cheaper rice varieties.
Plant Care
Pandanus is a tropical plant and loves lots of heat and water. Plant it in a warm wet location in your yard. They are tolerant of a range of soil types. It will help the plant a lot if you mulch heavily to retain soil moisture. Growth will slow down over winter on the Sunshine Coast QLD. After around 12 months, the plant will start producing offsets which can be separated off after they root to give you additional plants. It’s easy to grow in frost free environments.
