Pink Panther - Dragon Fruit Plant (H. setaceus x)
Pick up from Tewantin, QLD 4565. Or shipped to you (see end of post)
The typical plant for sale is shown in photo 2. Other images are for illustrative purposes only showing fruit from our parent plant and measurements taken on it. If grown in good conditions it can fruit in 1 year. It’s a self-fertile plant
Pink Panther is quite different to the dragon fruit you commonly find in the shops. It is a hybrid of Hylocereus setaceus crossed with another unknown dragon fruit.
The Fruit
Pink Panther produces an abundant crop of small, duck egg sized fruits (about 100g). The flesh is a vibrant pink / purple colour and it is very sweet (around 19 - 20 brix). It usually flowers quite heavily in early to mid-spring and will be ready for harvesting about 40 days later.
Flavour: ★★★★★
Harvest time: Early Summer
Plant Care
Pink Panther is a very vigorous cultivar and is easy to grow. It is happy in both full sun or part shade. During the hottest parts of summer, it will sometimes go a bit lime green to yellow in colour as the chlorophyll is broken down by the UV. But it doesn’t really get sunburn like some other cultivars. The yellowing can be corrected with around half a handful of magnesium sulphate (Epsom’s salts) a few weeks apart and watered in. Magnesium is an essential nutrient to produce chlorophyll.
Pink Panther is self-fertile and will set fruit on its own. It produces a lot of viable pollen which makes a good pollinator of other types of dragons which flower at the same time.
Dragon Fruit need a heavy support to climb up and hang over to flower. Being a jungle cactus, they prefer regular watering as long as it drains away quickly. They prefer rich organic soil and monthly feeds with composted organic plant foods. During early spring give additional potassium (potash of sulphate) to help develop a strong bloom response and good fruit set.
Plant Vigour: ★★★★★
Self-pollinating: Yes
If you purchase one of my dragon fruit plants, I can also provide a guide on how to trellis them for growing in pots.
