Yellow Sapote Fruit Tree
Pick up in Tewantin
The plant for sale is shown in the photo with a ruler. It’s a seedling grown plant of about 1 year old. Other images are for illustration only showing the typical fruit. It would typically start flowering in about 2 years under good conditions.
The Fruit
Some people call it the cheese cake fruit, because it can taste like that when fully ripe, both sweet and creamy. I like them fresh with blueberries ontop because their acidic flavour balances together nicely. Yellow Sapote produces a fruit about the size of an avocado. Best to let them fully ripen on the tree almost to the point of dropping. The yellow sapote fruit will go from green to yellow on the tree, and it takes another month before they start changing to a deeper yellow orange for the best flavour. Picking them too early makes them drier with a different flavour.
The Tree
It’s native to southern Mexico and Guatemala. It can grow up to 10 meters, but it’s a good idea to keep the tree down a bit lower with annual pruning so you can reach the fruit. This tree loves rich soil, regular watering and full sun. The species has good pest and disease resistance so it’s an easy one to grow and grows fast!
