Decking isn’t a sideline for us. We’re a dedicated Hardwood Sawmill set up and specifically programmed to produce Hardwood Decking, Shiplap and Wall Panel. The time capsules that we harvest grows locally and within sight of our sawmill. You can still buy the same solid hardwood that we used to build our infrastructure many years ago.
A structure built from heavier locally grown hardwood is likely to last longer and be more durable than one built from glued waste pine sawdust and plastic.
Which brings me to composite decking. Most composite decking is basically 50% wood fibre and 50% plastic. It’s all good to say that the “glue” is weatherproof and will last forever but the timber fibre used was probably cheap waste pine fibre in the first place. Composite deck may not wear as well as natural hardwood in that it may not be as hard as natural hardwood. Some of the more expensive composite decking products are fully sealed with thin layer of plastic. They did this to stop the moisture from entering the composite board and deep mould occurring in the wood fibre. The thin plastic protective layer is all good until it too gets scratched, damaged or broken down by the sun or moisture.
It would appear, even today, that it’s very difficult to get composite engineered products to outdo the natural hardwood product when exposed to full weather. By the simple fact that most engineered products are nailed or screwed in some way during their installation, this allows moisture to enter which ultimately is the cause for the premature decay of these products.
While solid hardwood can be scratched, banged and abused all day long, it can always be lightly sanded and re coated back to new.
Our sawmill was built somewhere around 1910 and it’s standing and being worked hard, daily. There is no way on this earth, if it had been built from composite decking, particle board, laminated beams or plywood that it would still be standing today.
Thanks for your time and interest. Please call 07******1008 anytime for any questions and options regarding our timber products. For orders less than $450.00 exclusive of GST, price will increase slightly.
