This specimen is a genuine Campo del Cielo iron meteorite. The Campo del Cielo meteorite is a renowned meteorite that was discovered in Argentina. Its name translates to "Field of the Sky" in Spanish, reflecting the circumstances of its discovery although it was long known by the native people. Campo del Cielo is classified as an iron meteorite, composed mainly of iron and nickel with trace amounts of other elements.
Believed to have fallen to Earth over 4,000 years ago, the Campo del Cielo meteorite is estimated to have originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is thought that the original meteoroid was part of a much larger parent body that was shattered through collisions. The Campo del Cielo meteorite strewn field is located in the Gran Chaco region of northern Argentina, the crater field covers 18.5 by 3 kilometres. It consists of numerous fragments scattered across the landscape, ranging in size from a few milligrams to massive specimens weighing such as El Chaco (28.8 tons) and Gancedo (30.8 tons).
