Apple’s keynote event on Wednesday, 9 September 2015 is now just days away. The long-awaited unveiling of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is finally here, coming exactly one year after the previous models.
As is often the case, Apple’s efforts to make a big splash with their announcements have been foiled once again with major leaks of the upcoming features released to the public.
At the launch of the previous iPhone 6 last year, iPhone listings on Gumtree increased by a whopping 203% compared to the previous month of launch. So, is it worth selling and upgrading your phone this year? Let’s take a look at what we’re going to be seeing.

Force touch – essential or gimmick?
Probably the biggest change they’ll be highlighting is the inclusion of ‘force touch,’ which means that the iPhone will know whether you’re pressing hard or soft and can do different things accordingly.
While this will apparently help with supporting handwritten signatures in future and offer new ways of controlling apps, Apple included this feature on their latest 13″ Macbook Pro laptops (which I’m using right now), and I can’t personally say I’ve used the feature even once since I bought it – and I’m always looking for ways to improve my trackpad-efficiency.
Nevertheless, we’ll have to wait and see what Apple dreams up for the future of this feature when it comes to touchscreen.
A beefed-up camera
The iPhone 6’s camera was already pretty good but lagged behind the Galaxy S6 and LG G4. Apple’s response has been to increase the pixel pool from 8MP to (most likely) 12MP.
Megapixels aren’t much of a talking point these days, as savvy users become aware that things like a faster f-stop (which allows better images in lower light) are more important. With the LG G4 and Galaxy S6 surpassing the current iPhone 6 at f1.8 and f1.9, there is the potential for an upgrade in this area.
Improved performance
The current iPhone 6 is fast, but Apple copped it last year for not making it fast enough compared to the iPhone 5. Addressing this now, the 6S is set to sport an upgraded A9 CPU and a full doubling of the RAM up to 2 GB, for more storage space for your selfies.
We predict that multitasking capabilities will feature in the new operating system iOS 9, which will be released soon.
iPhone 6S – now less bendy!
It didn’t take long for iPhone 6 owners to discover that their new king-sized phone frames were bending in their back pockets , causing fair embarrassment down at Apple’s headquarters.
The new iPhone has had a structural makeover with new, stronger casing materials and some mechanical rearrangements under the hood. We’re not sure whether it’ll be enough to enable sitting down with one in your back pocket, but fingers crossed!
More leaked changes
Other than the major enhancements mentioned, it is predicted that we will be seeing a:
- New rose-coloured variant to match your rose gold Apple Watch,
- An extra microphone for added voice clarity
- Improvements to ‘Finger Touch ID,’ (‘high-security’ identification tool!)
Nevertheless, there’s bound to be a lot of demand for the iPhone 6S and 6S plus, and that means last year’s models are soon to be flooding the second-hand market.
