Vintage farm windmill Bryan Bro’s 1930’s 6’ wheel
$3,500
This old windmill can be seen on a previous advertisement here.
If you click on my gumtree user name it should bring up a page or two of my other sale items.
This rare old beauty was first advertised more than a year ago and I'm sure would be long gone two of three times over, were it not for our border problems during covid.Serious attempts were made during our past border closure periods but so far it has proved enough to discourage the making of a sale.
Here it is seen with a replacement wheel.I have taken to the idea of presenting it with a clean but aged galvanised wheel and tail that came my way recently.
It would be up to the prospective buyers personal taste in appearance,as to which set of tinware was purchased with it.
There are ever so minor differences between the two sets, apart from an obvious lack of rust on one,but it would take something of an expert to be able to tell the two apart.
All of the parts in the mix are original 6' Bryan Bro's tinware, and repairs or upgrades occurred out on the job as a matter of course with the necessary ongoing maintenance out in the paddock.
The tower is the original 20' Bryan structure, which the manufacturer has finished in the usual way, having intentionally gone the extra mile with materials.
It's a very sound old unit.It was installed sometime in the 1930's,and I'm guessing it had done at least a couple of decades of work prior to being unplugged and stored.
It's showing signs of wear for sure, but it's a long way from what I would describe as 'worn out'.I think as a display,if it was promised just a little bit of attention every so often, that it would continue to behave itself for a lot of decades to come.
I have gone over the whole unit from top to bottom, and have replaced or repaired what I like to term the 'consumables',all the nuts bolts and pins that had either rusted or worn,as they all do over time.
The maintenance platform too is a replacement out of a couple of very nice sticks of seasoned Central Victorian hardwood
The beauty of having it here standing in the yard for all that time has been that it has allowed me an opportunity to climb up and to keep an eye on oil usage. The design of this mill is not the usual more modern oil bath setup,so it had me wondering at first with the wear and so forth, just how the lubrication might hold up,if it might quickly leak out and empty itself.
Yes it does weep oil both because of wear and according to the design, but I was pleased to see that at the end of around 12 months it has managed to retain a puddle of oil at the pinion gear, sufficient to preserve the important bits inside.
I will upgrade this particular advert as I go,as I have plans in the next few days to replace the rusted tail with the matching tail for this replacement wheel.
Thanks for viewing.Keep an eye out here for those photos to be upgraded as I follow the inspiration to show it off in it's new clothes.

- Windmill wheel Windmill fan 6 foot Southern CrossThis 6 foot windmill wheel was part of the latest recovery project. I was able to purchase a complete wrecked windmill for parts and the wheel we see here was mostly buried and overgrown with pasture. I love these little six foot versions with their smart slender appearance and plenty of sails. This model is known out on the job as being quite lively with very little wind about. As i say, quite a personal favourite that i have watched turning many times while wondering how, while there seems to b$650Allansford, VIC•2w
