RARE Presentation trophy MacRobertson-Miller Aust. aviation history
$250
Offered for sale is this unique and historically-significant antique/vintage 20th Century Australian-made brass presentation trophy vase. Made in Victoria by Gordon Hales (d. 1948) by HALAH Ware (in Carlton, Melbourne), known for producing a range of brasswares using a distinctive rose pattern and sold through various retailers across Australia. As HALAH appear to have commenced operations in the early 20th Century the vase itself may potentially date from 1900 to 1940.
The significance of this piece is in the presentation, given on 19 June 1940 to a Mr and Mrs D G John by the Hangar Staff of MacRobertson-Miller Airlines. The history of MacRobertson Chocolates in Australia is relatively well-known, however their involvement in forming a successful airline (running from 1927 to 1981, and until 1993 as part of Ansett Australia) is now less appreciated but no less important. Originally Adelaide-based, in 1934 they moved primary operations to Perth after winning a major Western Australian Government contract.
At the time this trophy was awarded, MacRobertson-Miller were operating a mixed domestic fleet of DeHavilland DH84 Dragon/DH83 Fox Moth, Lockheed (10B Electras) and Cessna (C.37) aircraft. By June 1940 several of the MacRobertson Miller fleet had been requisitioned by the RAAF for wartime service and they would go on to perform maintenance and repair contracts for the RAAF and US Navy.
Of great interest is that despite it being 10 months into WW2, Mr and Mrs John were thought of highly-enough to be presented this large trophy (which given rationing/scrapping of raw materials (such as brass) for the war effort may mean this was a secondhand piece thoughtfully re-used). Despite intensive research (and frustratingly), no further information can currently be offered on Mr and Mrs John and this will require further scholarship.
A rare and unique item of Australian aviation history.
Over time the brass has developed a deep, dark patination which along with its current condition has been respected for sale. There are several small dints.
Measures 38cm (h) x 15cm (diameter, excluding handles) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
