STUNNING 19th Cent. carved walnut chair shabby chic vintage
$450
Offered for sale is this stunning antique Victorian 19th Century carved walnut high-back lounge chair, most likely dating from the 1860’s and a masterpiece of the furniture-maker’s craft. The sort of unique chair you might see on an episode of ‘Salvage Hunters’, a genuine statement piece. One that stylistically finishes a room with ‘wow’ factor and sets the design tone for your home. You’ll not find another like this any time soon.
Would suit your warehouse apartment, shabby chic country residence, hipster bar or next to the castle fireplace.
Delicately carved in French Revival style with scrolling foliate elements but not completely over-the-top or frivolous. This chair reflects an artist’s balance between creativity and restraint (eg undecorated back rail). Sinuous curves flow and delight, there are small quality florishes such as tight scrolling and carved elements where none would be necessary – purely to show skill and design. The quality of the carving reflects a masters hand.
What could be the original upholstery has been left as-is, in all its delicious shabby chic glory. Personally I wouldn’t re-upolster it (however that’s up to the new owner). Castors are original Cope & Collison with porcelain rollers.
The walnut has been carefully nourished with a light application of natural beeswax. Nothing else has been done, simply lifting the original patina of 160 years to another level of appreciation.
A charming sign of how valued this chair was by previous owners is the ancient repair to the back left leg. The chair is still sound and oh-so-comfortable to relax in.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description. The Planet lamp is not included.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or personally deliver to Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).
