$120
SHIPPING OFFERED
Offered for sale is this interesting pair of 20th Century original prints by renowned English caricaturist and artist Ralph Sallon MBE (1899 to 1999), dating from 1963. Attending Hornsey School of Art in 1914, Sallon was eventually conscripted and saw active service during WW1 on the Western Front. A talented and popular cartoonist during the early 1920’s saw his career establish itself by being published in a wide variety of English magazines, periodicals and daily newspapers. Described as ‘one of the greatest caricaturists of all time’, he worked at The Daily Mirror from 1948 to 1991. His work encompassed drawing popular political, sports, media and cultural personalities, although during WW2 he worked for the War Department (Jewish Battalion) producing satirical propaganda images of various Nazi-party officals. In 1995 he was announced as the first Master Cartoonist by the Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain, with his works held in public, private and commercial collections.
Of interest to both the legal profession and caricature collectors, these two works are from a series of twelve featuring English High Court judges of the early-1960’s. The first (No.3) depicts The Right Hon Viscount Kilmuir (Lord High Chancellor from 1954 to 1962). He is well-known as one of the prosecutors at the Nuremberg Trials and assisting to draft the European Convention on Human Rights. The second (No.9) shows The Right Hon Baron Upjohn.
Both possess a wonderful sense of human and comic observation (as well as slight satire) with their depictions.
Each has a presentation message on the reverse from County Court judge and barrister His Honour Michael (WMR) Kelly (author of Victoria’s first Criminal Charge Book). The identity of the recipient has been blurred to protect their privacy.
In excellent original condition.
Each measures (framed) 41.5cm (w) x 52.5cm (h) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
