RARE 20th Century Vintage Balinese Pita Maha School carving MCM style
$125
SHIPPING OFFERED
Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century Balinese-made carved wooden statue, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. Research attributes this to a member of the Pita Maha School artistic movement, by a member of the distinguished Bagus wood-carving family. In Australia there is currently limited knowledge and appreciation of this unique 20th Century Balinese artistic group; that from 1934 to 1978 strove to develop the island’s domestic art movement. Often working in conjunction with colonial Dutch artists and administrators, its aims were to improve the quality and promote excellence of endemic wood-carving and other creative arts. Mostly based around the village of Mas (south of Ubud), this movement saw a blossoming of design that helped establish today’s thriving commercial woodcarving industry as well as the creation of individual, distinct artworks (such as this example). It nurtured a collection of master carvers whose work has not only defined the modern carving industry, but set artistic benchmarks rarely been surpassed since the group’s ending.
For the thousands of pieces of cheaper tourist carving, you’ll find a much rarer example like this.
The elongated, elegant and expressive form depicts a temple maiden in an act of votive worship. She is respectfully holding offerings of water with two other items (a censer and food) at her feet; set standing on a pedestal. All carved from one solid piece of wood! The touching of the water (held in either a coconut or bowl), shown spilling over the sides may hold Buddhist connotations of the soul’s ability to open itself up the divine truth and represents meditative activation.
Wonderfully Mid-Century Modern in style, its sleek form may reference bronze Art Deco statuary found in central Europe (such as those created by Chiparus, Lorenzl, Preiss, Le Faguays, etc), whilst remaining distinctly rooted in Bali’s unique and beautiful culture.
A unique, engaging and delightful original work of art.
In very good original condition, there is some gentle patination that confirms this as being a proper vintage piece and not modern reproduction. Please note there are two small scrapes on the lower reverse, not visible from the front (as pictured).
Measures 56cm (h) x 9.5cm (w) x 13cm (d) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.
