S.T.Gill 1857 print Moorabool Street Geelong antique
$200
Presented for sale is this charming 1857 Samuel Thomas Gill print, ‘Moorabool Street from Myers Street, Geelong. A single plate from the larger collective work, ‘Victoria Illustrated’ (Sands & Kelly, 1857). Gill (born 1818, died 1880) is of course most famous for his depictions of gold rush life on the Victorian diggings. He lived a colourful life but died in poverty on the steps of the Melbourne Post Office.
Six years after the gold rush of 1851 denuded towns of their population, in incredible detail Gill has depicted everyday life in Geelong with small vignettes of activity such as (from right to left):
- A pair of stockings hanging on a building (maybe advertising ... well you can guess)
- Two men chatting away (one is the bullock driver of the cart to their left)
- Two women singing and playing instruments (the triangle and hurdy-gurdy) while an interested boy looks on. Possibly they’re singing temperance songs, in contrast to the activity of the building with stockings!).
- A sulky heading at speed down Moorabool Street
- A little dog harassing the horse pulling the sulky (dogs often featured in Gill’s works)
- At the end of the street, sailing clipper ships docked and the future of travel coming in to harbour - a steamship
Measures 27cm x 30cm (approx). Ready to hang, nothing to spend. There is some foxing however remember this is 164-years old!
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can deliver to Melbourne (CBD area) for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).
