Vint. 20th Cent. Arts Crafts-style Weeda Tasmanian copper candlestick
$35
SHIPPING OFFERED
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Tasmanian ‘Weeda’ hand-formed copper candlestick, most likely dating from 1951 to the 1970’s. The Weeda factory was founded by Cornelius (Kees) and Suzanna Weeda at Ulverstone in 1951. Both Cornelius (who trained as a blacksmith) and Suzanna were active members of the Dutch Resistance during WW2, with Cornelius eventually being sent to Dachau Concentration Camp. Migrating to Australia in 1951, their successful copper-art business operated until 1980 (with Cornelius making original works into his eighties - before passing away in 1994).
In a charming Arts and Crafts style the hand-plenished domed base leads to a curved and notched stem, finishing in a plenished cup. This entire piece was hand-formed and made using Australian-produced copper pipe (as seen with the ‘Keembla’ stamp on the terminal).
Over time and use a soft and warm patination has developed.
Measures 19cm (h) x 8.5cm (diameter, at base) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
