RARE 1950s Mid Century MYER HERITAGE Solid SILKY OAK CHEST of DRAWERS
$390 Negotiable
TEXT or PHONE CONTACT ONLY PLEASE ON ALL MY ITEMS. NO POSTAGE OFFERED.
RARE Mid Century 1950's MYER HERITAGE CHEST of DRAWERS / TALLBOY made from SOLID Australian SILKY OAK SILKYOAK.
Open to offers on this and the other pieces in the matching set of THREE.
Amazing highly figured SILKY OAK wood featured on this rare piece - that is the beauty of the now endangered wood that is SILKY OAK. Its pronounced medulla rays are like ribbons that shimmer in sunlight. It was once widely used for furniture manufacture & even firewood, sadly not any more. Now it's only used to create small artisan pieces or super high-end furniture as large lengths are now very rare.
I think this may be a piece created by the iconic Australian designer FRED WARD who created pieces for Myer Heritage. You could buy this furniture just for its valuable timber!!!
This piece is completely constructed from SOLID SILKY OAK, not just the drawer fronts and sides plus the top, legs and internal parts you can see. (All except the drawer bottoms & back panels).
NOTE: Silky Oak is native to the East coast of Australia, not here in West Australia. You just don't see furniture made from this rare & valuable wood these days, but this was made in the early 1950's when Silky Oak was not as scarce a material it is nowadays.
I have seen this & the other pieces in this set online labelled with MYER HERITAGE tags. Usually made in solid Tasmanian Myrtle.
These examples are stamped: SELLY & BRYDEN, Fitzgerald Street, Perth, 4-2-52 (1952). These were purchased together as a set of three.
This had floral adhesive contact lining all the drawers, I slowly peeled it off, due to its age there is no adhesive residue. The Australian Standards label came with it as you can see, it was stuck to the adhesive of the contact. (shown mirror image for readability).
One drawer still has the adhesive intact, I missed this one. Easily removed tho.
It's is lovely vintage used condition, you can see the beautiful wood grain - just spectacular!
Looks very much to be influenced by the furniture of the American company Hayward Wakefield.
Stripped & refinished this would be an ABSOLUTE STUNNER - great project for the DIY or professional restorer.
I am also selling the other matching pieces in this set as shown - 1 x BEDSIDE TABLE & 1 x DRESSING TABLE/VANITY with MIRROR.
